This subject has baffled me for years and it can be summed up in one question: Why are celebrities treated like gods? It’s easier to understand why professional athletes are looked up to as role models for those that play a particular sport but I’m not referring to professional athletes. The same goes for musical artists. If you fell in love with a particular album and saw the lead singer in a laundromat that would be pretty damn cool, especially upon learning that they still use a laundromat. This question arises from Hollywood celebrities, socialites, wealthy people, etc.
There has been incredible amounts of media surrounding this small demographic and one can’t help but ask: why? Why these select people? Who decides which people are going to become famous? Most are very attractive, sure, but if that’s what causes popularity then a large number people in Los Angeles would fit in that category. Fewer, but still a large percentage, are very wealthy as well. And yet, we never hear of these people, however, you could find everything Paris Hilton did in the last week. Why?
I’ve heard a great many people pick apart the most minute imperfections on celebrities whom they’ve never met. Can I say with absolute certainty that Paris Hilton is as dumb a nail…no. I’ve never met her. The important thing is I couldn’t care less if I ever met her or not. She’s not interesting to me in any way. Therefore I choose to not waste my time reading about what’s her favorite drink. Lindsey Lohan got her 11th DUI…awesome…that doesn’t effect me in any way so why would I want to read about it.
Back when I used to watch television in the wee hours of the night/morning I noticed a “show,” called The Soup. This entire show is about foolish things celebrities do. While watching it, I couldn’t help but think how painfully ordinary celebrities are and that’s just it, THEY ARE ORDINARY! So why must we follow them when they take their kids to school, go shopping, get a DUI, eat food, read a book, get a DUI, go to a party, get drunk, get a DUI, sleep with strangers, etc., etc. WHO FUCKING CARES! The Soup portrays celebrities as pathetic, and yet, The Soup is a TV Show that display famous people doing stupid things. How fucking pathetic is that!
To conclude, celebrities are ordinary people who do stupid things just like you and me. We the people decide who’s a celebrity and who’s not. If you think Hilton and countless others are worthless to society then IGNORE THEM. Don’t buy fucking People Magazine and Us Weekly when she’s on the cover…or at all for that matter. Imagine if every time you made a mistake there was a herd of camera wielding hunters ready to take the shot from 15 angles. If you respect an actor/actress, artist or athlete then by all means, obsess away. But there are far better ways to do this than using the following:
