spoken poison

Would you enjoy sounding 10 times more intelligent and feel more confident in your everyday speech? There is no studying and you don’t even need a dictionary. In fact you don’t even need to increase your vocabulary, quite the contrary you simply need to eliminate one word. It’s such a commonly misused word that you have probably heard it ruin conversations on several occasions. Yes, that word…

like.

The word “like,” has become verbal heroin of our time. “Well, all of my friends do it!” That’s no reason to stick a needle in your arm or continue using this hopeless excuse for a word. It is a plague, an illness, hold on, let me get my Thesaurus, an infection, a problem, a cancer, a malady, etc., etc.

I’m still training myself to completly remove the word “like,” from my own personal lexicon. The thing that really surprised me is that not only did I use it out of context on a regular basis, it’s a word that shouldn’t even exist. You will never, ever, run into a situation where “like,” is the only viable option. Consider the following:

  • similar to
  • as if
  • fond of
  • characteristic of
  • equal
  • such as
I’m sure there’s many others that can get the job done. So go ahead, take the pill, kick the habit, do what must be done for the sake of the English language. At the very least replace “like,” with another, completely random, word, such as “flamingo,” or “jackhammer.” Only then will you begin to realize how rediculous we sound.
